During the interview, AP4PIC co-founder Aivbars Vembris explained that the company primarily offers services rather than end products, focusing on the development and potential manufacturing of photonic microchips based on polymer platforms. He noted that these light-based chips could significantly improve efficiency, particularly in data centers, where energy consumption is becoming a critical issue.
He also discussed the role of artificial intelligence, emphasizing that while it is a valuable tool—especially for processing large volumes of data—current expectations may be somewhat overstated. Drawing a parallel with the early internet era, he suggested that AI will bring meaningful advancements but will not replace human creativity or solve all challenges.
Additionally, he highlighted that Latvia is relatively advanced in digitalization within Europe, with strong IT infrastructure and widespread use of digital solutions. At the same time, he stressed the growing importance of data security and careful consideration of data storage in the context of current geopolitical realities.
